Being the home of awesome ruins like Machu Picchu, Peru is undoubtedly a good option for backpackers and budget travelers looking to travel in South America. With its rich history, ruins, popular urban centers,and great ecotourism, Peru offers a lot for prospective travelers. Getting by on $15 a day is possible according to Wikitravel, so your money can go a long way offering you an extended budget trip if you’re interested.

Peru Travel Costs

  • Average meal - $1.50 (street food)
  • Nice, steak dinner - $6.00
  • Beer - $1.50
  • Cappuccino - $1.00
  • Coffee: $0.70
  • Croissant or pastry: $.80
  • Bottle of water: $0.70
  • Hostel dorm bed- $4.00-7.00
  • Transportation - quick taxi $1.00 - No meters though, so negotiate beforehand.

  • Nightlife - Party in Lima and Cuzco
  • Safety - Normal. Not too safe at night though.
  • Public Transportation - No public transportation, but there are private taxis and buses. So meh..
