Tokyo, Japan Travel Living Costs

Tokyo Japan is a very expensive destination for many Western travelers.  While food costs seem to be surprisingly affordable, everything else seems to be pretty expensive, like lodging, transportation, and internet access.  If you’re bringing a laptop, you might be able to find some free wifi since Japan is much more mobile and tech friendly than even the US.

Tokyo, Japan Travel Costs

  • McDonald’s Big Mac - $2.50
  • Beer - $2.30 at supermarket
  • 12 oz coke - $1.20
  • Cigarettes soft pack of 20 - $2.55
  • Starbuck’s tall latte - $3.20
  • Very Small one room apartment - $350-400/month
  • Hostel dorm and capsule hotels - $25-30/night
  • Transportation taxis ~$8, (more linked below)
  • Internet - $9/hour!

    Internet use in Tokyo may be expensive, but you didn’t mention that usually comes with free tea, coffee, and soft drinks, and sometimes somewhere to shower!
